Little Elms learn about Nature

The start of the Summer Term in Little Elms has been all about inspiring nature. Most of us live in urban areas, in busy cities where nature is tamed and does not take an important place in daily life. Inspiring nature to children should be an essential part of their early education. “I believe the world is incomprehensibly beautiful. An endless prospect of magic and wonder” said Ansel Adams. Children are very sensitive to nature’s beauty, finding miracles and interesting things everywhere.

At Elmhurst we are lucky to have Forest School as a part of our curriculum and our boys benefit greatly from being able to play and explore in untamed nature. Alongside Forest School, by bringing nature into our Little Elms classroom, the boys have been able to see life, growth and decay over time and are observing nature's miracles first hand.

At the moment, we are growing sunflowers, runner beans, tomatoes and pansies. The boys really enjoyed the process of planting the seeds and watching them grow.

We have also been exploring minibeasts. We had a visit from a scientist from the RSPB and he helped us explore different minibeasts and their habitats. We have also been fortunate enough to be looking after some tadpoles, an ant farm and the class favourite, five ‘Very Hungry Caterpillars’. We are all anxiously waiting for them to turn into cocoons and then Painted Lady Butterflies. Nature has also inspired lots of focus activities, new language and some wonderful descriptive writing. Little Elms are truly inspired.
