London 2012

Elmhurst School for Boys

10th September 2012 | Headmaster's Blog

Sadly, the wonderful experience of London 2012 draws to a close.  Our small group of boys, selected for their good behaviour and good example, will have the unique experience of seeing the Team GB parade in London today.

We spoke in assembly this morning of the exciting things we have seen, the achievements of the likes of Mo Farrah, Usan Bolt, Ellie Simmonds and, my personal favourite, Johnnie Peacock.

We also reflected on the hard work that goes into preparing each event.  I used Sophia Warner as an example.  Sophia came 4th in the Paralympics 100m and 200m.  She suffers from Cerebal Palsy, a life long condition that affects the body’s motor control.  She has a team of trainers who have helped her.  Walking backwards and standing on one leg are part of her regime to try and help her body to respond to the commands to simply run; something any able bodied athlete takes for granted.

“That’s easy” one boy said when I showed them walking backwards. Yes it is for most of us, but not for people like Sophia.  So spare a thought today not just for all the Olympians and Paralympians, but the countless number of unnamed coaches and support staff that have helped them in their incredible achievements, even if it is “just” walking backwards!
