The media in this country is very quick to make judgement's, however contradictory those judgement's may be.
The Times newspaper illustrated this very clearly over the weekend.
On one hand they run their league tables, cementing in some parent’s minds the schools they “must” get to for their children to succeed.
Then on the other hand they run a major article about children increasingly “suffering from depression and anxiety thanks to parental pressure to succeed”.
The article in question was written by Clinical Psychologist, Professor Tanya Byron and she poses many of the questions we as parents all ask ourselves when considering our child’s path through education.
Do we need a tutor? Should I help with homework? Do I praise results or effort? How can we find time just to be together as a family? Is our child sleep-deprived?
It is a thought provoking article and is worth reading….. http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/health/child-health/article3922510.ece
We do not work in a perfect system and as far as I am concerned we as a school have a responsibility to provide a well-balanced education for our children, that allows them to explore the world around them, whilst providing them with the skills that will help them succeed in their Secondary Education and at life in general.
