Nurturing, inspiring and celebrating in Little Elms

Here at Elmhurst, we identify, nurture and celebrate the talents of each and every boy, in an inspiring environment which blends innovation with tradition and successfully equips boys with the skills they need to excel in the 21stCentury.

As Early Years practitioners, we aspire to do this every day. One of the ways we nurture our boys is through the Buddy System. Each Little Elm is given a Buddy before he joins us in September. Their Buddy then writes them a letter, which they receive over the Summer. The letter is a welcome to Elmhurst School, but also an introduction to a valuable relationship. When I do my home visits, the Buddy letters are usually one of the first things the new Little Elm will want to talk about.

Once the boys begin their Elmhurst journey, they get their first opportunity to meet their Buddy at Buddy Lunch. Buddy Lunch takes place every Monday and is a wonderful time for both the Little Elms and the Year 6 boys. The Year 6 boys really try to nurture and treat the Little Elms as if they were their little brother. They encourage the boys to eat, fill their drinks and help them clean the table at the end of lunch. Then, the Year 6 boys take their Buddy to the playground and play the games that the Little Elms enjoy. It is really lovely to see!

This system is obviously nurturing for the Little Elms but also for the Year 6 boys. Year 6 can be a very stressful time - their time at Primary School is coming to an end and with this, 11+ exams, with some pupils taking exams for multiple schools. This nurturing system also allows the Year 6 boys to enjoy playing and being a child again.

In this stressful world that we all live in, who doesn't want to be a child again, even for an hour?
