Old Elmhurstians

Elmhurst School for Boys

10th February 2014 | Headmaster's Blog

It’s always nice to hear from ex-pupils, the other day I received this note from a pupil who was here in the 1960’s. I was able to find mention of him in one of our old Elmhurstian magazines.  It goes to show how long reaching the legacy of having received an education at Elmhurst can be and that there are no bounds as to what our boys can achieve.

Dear Sir.

I was browsing the internet wanted to say that after 50 years I was very pleased to see my old school still standing,

I attended Elmhurst in 1963 when there were steam trains running from Purley every day. My headmaster was Mr. Squire and my English teacher was Mr. Rose. I remember that I used to get the cane for playing truant. I recollect walking through the kitchen to drink our allotted milk every morning. I came to the school after suffering Polio at 4 years of age and had missed many years of schooling, Elmhurst will always remain in my memories as a school of excellence and compassion. 50 years later I now reside in the USA and am the CTO and scientist for and electronics company, dozens of patents and degrees later I still feel I owe a lot to the outstanding foundational teaching of your school and its dedicated staff.

I will always remember a statement Mr. Rose made after talking of his sailing adventures on summer day: Do not let anyone tell you that you cannot do something, as this is only their opinion, and that opinion will never stop you from becoming whatever you strive to become.

I wish the school and staff the very best.

Regards, Graham P. Bloy
