Providing Opportunities

Elmhurst School for Boys

15th December 2017 | Headmaster's Blog

I would like to start my blog by saying a great big ‘Thank you!’ to Miss Laurent, Miss Cole and of course Mr Whiting for a wonderful Carol Concert last night. As I mentioned in my address, the Carol Concert is a wonderful way to start the Christmas festivities. I am always delighted with the support we receive from our Elmhurst community at these events as I was with the turnout for the Christmas Fair last Sunday. I am sure the whole Elmhurst family is united in wishing Mr Whiting every success as he moves on to his new post as Director of Music at Grace Church in Newark, New Jersey, USA, after a 10 year association with the school. I am also excited about all of the possible future collaborative opportunities between Grace Church and Elmhurst School.

We are very proud of the way in which we inspire the boys to develop existing and new talents, providing them with the opportunities to build confidence and achieve their full potential. The extra-curricular programme of clubs is one way in which we are able to facilitate those opportunities. In the Summer Term we introduced Tri-Golf and TB Tennis and we have continued to use outside providers for some of our clubs, this term. The introduction of HB Sports delivering Multi-Sports to different year groups on different evenings, has been a welcome and popular addition to the after school programme. I am delighted that Mrs Pampin is back working alongside us to deliver the extremely popular Spanish Language Club and BB Soccer continues to flourish in its association with the school.

The staff have also been challenged to offer a variety of clubs throughout the Autumn Term and they have succeeded in delivering a wide range of opportunities for the boys to enjoy. This term, clubs have included:

  • Cookery
  • Art
  • Table Tennis
  • Cross Country
  • Football
  • Gardening
  • Recorder
  • Choir
  • Orchestra
  • Brain Ache
  • Mindfulness
  • Yoga
  • Model Making

Alongside this, the boys recently enjoyed a taster session of Hockey on the astro turf of Langley Park Girls School, which was so successful that we have now booked the astroturf for Hockey every Friday evening, throughout the Spring Term. We have also entered mixed Hockey tournaments in collaboration with Old Palace and Croydon High School.

If you provide the boys with the opportunity, then all of their talents can be nurtured. I am determined for our pupils to be given as many opportunities as we can offer, well into 2018.

It just remains for me to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

- Mr. A J Padfield
