Little Elms Blog: EYFS Development Matters

“Children are born ready, able and eager to learn. They actively reach out to interact with other people and the world around them. Development is not an automatic process, however. It depends on each unique child having opportunities to interact in positive relationships and enabling environments.” The Early Years Foundation Stage Development Matters is the government document that all Early Years providers use as a basis for supporting a child's learning. There are four themes that underpin the guidance: A Unique Child + Positive Relationships + Enabling Environments = Learning and Development. As an Early Years Professional, I use ongoing formative assessment to ensure each child’s current needs are provided for.

There are seven areas of Learning and Development. The three prime areas are Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development and Communication and Language. The importance of the core areas are paramount to Learning and Development. What we want for your child is that he can manage his own feelings and behaviour, can make positive relationships, and has the confidence to talk to his peers during play and to familiar adults, about his feelings and opinions. We try to develop his listening and attention, understanding and speaking skills within Communication and Language. Physical development if also essential - we want your child to be independent with his health and self care, as well as being able to move and handle equipment with confident ability.

There are also four specific areas of development. These are Literacy, Maths, Understanding of the World and Expressive Arts. In Little Elms these areas are always implemented in our weekly planning and the boys have an opportunities to develop in these areas in both one-to-one teaching and our group learning sessions. Even though the specific areas are treated with importance, it is the prime or core areas that will really underpin your son’s Learning and Development and why Early Years Practitioners stress the importance of them. If you would like to see all the steps your son is taking, you can view the full EYFS Development Matters Document here: Development Matters in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
