The Elmhurst Year 6 Experience

STRIDE, ESB, Shakespeare, Outward Bounds, Buddies, Prefects, Head Boys and House Captains, these are just a few of the new experiences that our boys will gain when they enter into Year 6 at Elmhurst. When you think about Year 6 in any independent Preparatory School, you might be forgiven for thinking of exam pressure, the stresses and strains of the Senior School entrance process and the impact this may have on the wellbeing of your child and indeed, your family. However, at Elmhurst, we have spent time and have thought long and hard about how to enrich the boys’ Year 6 experience, so that it is not entirely dominated by having to secure a place in your secondary school of choice.

Last night, for example, the Year 6 boys joined up with Year 5 to deliver the Poetry and Music Performance Evening to their parents. A very welcome distraction from the Booster Classes, Exam practise and mock interviews taking place almost on a daily basis. In order to enrich the Year 6 curriculum, we introduced last year, the STRIDE - ‘Putting Young Minds to Work’ Project. The boys loved the challenge of having to think critically and creatively when coming up with a business idea, working collaboratively in teams to plan and then deliver their venture to potential clients. Without strong communication skills also, they would not have been able to sell their products and make the £350 they raised.

Following this, the boys started preparing their presentations and speeches for the English Speaking Board Exam. Some of the boys had attended our LAMDA Club and were able to put their presentation skills to good use for this challenge. Others developed their skills through the process and all achieved good passes in the officially recognised ESB Exam. Some of the boys chose famous speeches from Shakespeare for their ESB project, which in turn prepared them for their magical end of year performance of ‘Twelfth Night’ in the woods. This is a memorable and very special way for them to finish their Forest School experience at Elmhurst, which starts in Little Elms and continues throughout their time in each year group.

Alongside their Outward Bounds residential week away and their responsibilities as boys at the top end of the school, they leave Elmhurst as well rounded young gentlemen with the skills and experiences which will have effectively prepared them for life in the 21st century...and we say, ‘Once an Elmhurst Boy, Always an Elmhurst Boy!’
