Little Elms Blog: Transitions

During the course of a child’s life, change is inevitable. Families move, siblings are born, school begins and, consequently, transitions happen. Knowing about children’s development can help us understand how they respond to transition. In Little Elms we support all the boys in helping them transition into Reception. During the school year, we spend a lot of time with the Reception teachers and pupils, helping the boy in Little Elms to feel secure and comfortable during the transition.

"Children, just like adults, experience feelings as they anticipate or react to transitions and show them in their behaviors. Their responses reflect their developmental stage as well as who they are as unique individuals. Because each child’s temperament, resiliency, and prior experience vary, transition affects them in different ways. While one child may manage transition smoothly, another may have difficulties. Keeping child development in mind helps us understand children’s emotions and behaviors as they face transition." - Supporting Transitions: Using Child Development

I have been supporting the Little Elms with their personal development all year, through Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) sessions. The skills they have learned in this important area of the Early Years Foundation Stage, will help them with their emotions during this transition period. Recently, I have introduced Mindfulness breathing into our PSED circle times on Monday. Children of all ages can benefit from mindfulness, the simple practice of bringing a gentle, accepting attitude to the present moment. The Little Elms think it is really fun and after a session, there is a noticeable change in the classroom.

It has been an amazing year and I am genuinely fond of each boy in this class. They have grown so much and I am so proud of each one. The boys are ready for Reception and I know that they will thrive and continue to excel in their Elmhurst journey.
