Welcome to the summer term!

Elmhurst School for Boys

8th May 2017 | Heads Blog

Welcome back after the Easter break. I hope you all had a rest and are ready for the exciting summer term. We have got so much to look forward to with Upper and Lower School Sports Days, the House Swimming Gala, the EFA Summer Fayre, International Day, the Head’s Cricket match vs. parents, Art Exhibition, Music Concerts, Elmhurst’s Got Talent and Prize Giving. It is difficult to imagine how we fit everything in alongside Cricket Fixtures, Football Tournaments an ISI Inspection and the recruitment process for the new Head.

I am delighted to be able to tell you that the boys have settled in well and have been testing their ‘grit’ in Forest School, PE and in academic lessons. I took Year 3 PE this week, where the Learning Objective was to understand the qualities required for long distance running. I know myself that not everybody is made to be able to run long distances. However, the qualities required to achieve any run longer than a few hundred metres are the same qualities required for the challenges of life in the 21st century. The task was a running challenge similar to the pursuit in cycling, where boys of a similar ability are paired against each other. They start at opposite sides of a track and chase each other down until one of the pair is caught. The dialogue in the reflection period revolves around having a steady pace, stamina and how you start to sweat to cool down when you are running hard. The qualities, however, were identified as determination, positivity and grit.

I remember running Cross Country at school and how I had to ‘dig deep’ to be able to keep going on demanding, undulating terrain. The Year 3 Elmhurst boys loved the challenge of catching their friends but during the process they were understanding of the qualities required to be successful. In life we are challenged to keep going when we have had enough or to demonstrate determination and ‘grit’ to achieve our goals. This is why I have always loved sport, because it reflects life.

Welcome to the summer term!
