Our Nursery Stages

Discoverers | Baby Stage | 6 months to 1 Years old

Here, we focus on the prime areas of the early years foundational stage (EYFS) statutory framework:

  • Personal development
  • Social and emotional development
  • Physical development
  • Communication and language

These form the basis for successful learning in the four specific areas of the EYFS.

Sensory play and experiences at Little Elmhurst Nursery support and nurture cognitive development, memory retention, and increase the ability to respond to age-appropriate tasks and problem solving through discovery.

Explorers and Adventurers | Toddler Stages | 1 to 3 Year Olds

We help children at Little Elmhurst explore and develop their ideas. We do this by creating an environment that allows for open-ended learning opportunities guided by their budding interests and passions.

We incorporate literacy and mathematics into daily adventures, making play a cornerstone of the shared learning experience. This ensures that children develop an awareness of numbers, patterns, words, rhyming, and stories from an early age. In addition to our daily free-flow outdoor learning, we also include age-appropriate activities and exploration of the main school grounds.

Pioneers | Pre Reception

Our Pioneers programme prepares children for a confident transition into Reception through a balance of structured learning, creative exploration, and outdoor experiences. Daily literacy and mathematics sessions support the specific areas of the EYFS framework, including Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts and Design.

Based in dedicated classrooms within the main school, children benefit from specialist teaching in music, dance, art, and languages, helping to develop creativity, communication, coordination, and confidence. Physical activities, including balancing, throwing, and catching, further strengthen fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, supporting children’s overall development and school readiness.

Why Join Little Elmhurst Nursery?

We follow a curriculum of enquiry-based learning. This means that we follow our pupils’ interests and ideas, letting their questions shape the lessons they attend. These lessons quickly evolve into something greater than a strict lesson plan. It is a co-constructed learning experience that maximises engagement and lets our students feel truly involved in their learning process.

Settling Into Our Nursery with Specialised Sessions

Beginning nursery is often the first time a child is away from their parents for any significant amount of time. We know that this is a significant milestone for a child and often a daunting one. That is why we run specialised settling in sessions.

Settling in sessions are carefully crafted to ensure a seamless and enjoyable transition for you and your child. They give children the opportunity to gradually explore their new surroundings, promoting a sense of comfort and confidence. At the same time, they allow you to develop a trusting relationship with our dedicated Nursery team.

51-Week Provision

We understand the importance of flexibility for busy families. That’s why we provide care 51 weeks a year, with convenient wrap-around services from 8 am to 6 pm.

Personalised Nursery Care and Attention

At Elmhurst, we provide a personalised nursery experience for all children in our care. Whether it’s catering to dietary preferences or supporting developmental milestones, our experienced staff stand ready to help. Their dedication and keen attention to detail are what helps all of our little ones flourish, preparing them for the next steps in their educational journey.

Nap Time

We know that getting young children to sleep can be a challenge at the best of times. Finding a schedule that works for both parent and child is an achievement in itself and one we try to honour.

We follow our children’s home sleep routines as much as possible, minimising disruptions to their circadian rhythm. This helps them have an easier nap time at our nursery and lets you keep to your sleep schedule at home.

Every child at our nursery is assigned a bag with a new blanket and sheet. These are regularly washed and replaced as necessary.

Finally, our carefully planned quiet times ensure that even very young and sensitive babies will be able to sleep at our nursery. Children are always supervised whilst sleeping and checks are conducted every 15 minutes.

Pre-Reception to Reception Transition Programme

Getting ready for the next big step! Based on the main Prep school site, our Pioneers are well prepared for Reception, getting to know the school routines and staff. Towards the end of their time in Pioneers, we spend 6–8 weeks specifically working on a Pre-Reception to Reception Transition Programme – tailored to equip children with the skills, confidence, and independence they need to thrive in the Prep School. By focusing on emotional readiness and academic preparation, we make sure your child’s transition is smooth, successful, and exciting.

An Engaging and Educational Nursery Experience

We believe every child deserves a vibrant and enriching education. Our diverse curriculum is designed to spark creativity, curiosity, and academic growth across various subjects. From early literacy and numeracy to music, art, outdoor learning, and Spanish lessons, we inspire a lifelong love of learning from an early age. Literacy and numeracy are seamlessly integrated into our activities, helping children develop an understanding of letters, sounds, and numbers. By fostering independent problem-solving skills, we lay a solid foundation for their future and ensure a smooth transition into Reception.
