Elmhurst Reception

Elmhurst School for Boys

In Reception here at Elmhurst School for boys, we encourage a love of learning from an early age. With our small class sizes, we can treat each and every one of our boys as an individual, coupled with our dynamic and creative curriculum we ensure that each pupil achieves their full potential.

We follow the Jolly Phonics scheme to introduce sounds in Reception and the Read Write Inc. Scheme to build on this in Reception and Key Stage 1. Handwriting is also practised regularly and the boys develop their Maths skills using the Collins New Primary Maths scheme. Our Reception pupils also benefit from specialist teaching in Music and French and enjoy PE lessons twice a week, as well as Swimming from Summer term.

Outside of the classroom, there is plenty of opportunity for outdoor learning and exploration of the natural environment, through regular Forest School sessions. Our Forest School is enjoyed by all year groups throughout the school, and provide invaluable opportunities for developing problem-solving skills, initiative, co-operation and physical development. Our Reception pupils also benefit from a buddy system, which pairs each Reception pupil with a Year 6 boy, who will help them to settle into school routines quickly and happily.

We pride ourselves on offering a flexible Wraparound Care which allows boys to be safely looked after from 7.30 am until 6.30 pm, whilst our Holiday Club provides many new opportunities for the boys.
