Head’s Blog: New School Council Representatives

Posted: 19th September 2025

And the representative for the year is…

This sentence caused great excitement at the end of a week where classes bid to be the new school voice representative. With school council, eco council, harmony council and lunch council working together to form our school parliament, roles on the councils are coveted.

The children took their roles as both candidates and voters very seriously, and we are now delighted to announce our new School Council representatives, chosen by their peers to be their voice this year. Congratulations to all of the successful candidates, who received their official badges in today’s whole-school assembly.

This real-life experience of democracy came just after our school assemblies to mark the International Day of Democracy on 15th September. Mrs Ahmed and Mrs Marriott led a thoughtful discussion with the children, using a simple yet powerful story called The Farmer’s Cart to spark conversation and encourage them to share their understanding of what democracy truly means.

The Farmer’s Cart is a fable that explores how important it is for everyone to have a chance to have their voice heard. The children gained some wonderful insights, understanding that it is vital for everyone to have a say. The discussions also touched on a more nuanced idea: that in a democracy, not everyone always gets what they want, a key lesson in understanding compromise and the greater good.

At Elmhurst, we believe that nurturing these values from a young age is crucial for helping our children grow into responsible, empathetic, and engaged citizens. The assembly on democracy, followed by the exciting and empowering school parliament elections, was a perfect example of how we strive to do just that.
